Water Reserves in Critical Condition: Average Fill Rate Drops to 44.4%

The current state of Mauritius’ water reserves is alarming, with the average fill rate of the seven main reservoirs standing at just 44.4% as of Tuesday, March 18. This marks a slight decline from the previous day’s rate of 44.5%, underscoring the growing strain on the island’s water resources.

What makes this situation even more concerning is the stark contrast to the same period last year, when the reservoirs were at a healthy 92.8% capacity. The dramatic drop highlights the severity of the current water crisis and raises urgent concerns about sustainable water management.

Here’s a breakdown of the fill rates for each reservoir, as reported by the Water Resources Unit under the Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities:

  • La Nicolière: 66.7%

  • Piton-du-Milieu: 59.2%

  • Mare-Longue: 51.8%

  • Bagatelle: 48.5%

  • Midlands: 45.1%

  • Mare-aux-Vacoas: 38.9%

  • La Ferme: 31.8%

With some reservoirs, such as La Ferme, operating at critically low levels (31.8%), the need for immediate action and responsible water usage cannot be overstated.

The Water Resources Unit has reiterated its call for the public to adopt water-saving measures and use this precious resource wisely. As the island grapples with this ongoing challenge, collective efforts will be crucial to mitigating the impact of the water shortage.

Stay informed and join the conversation on sustainable water management. Together, we can make a difference.
